Special children, Special Education, Special needs

Our little island has many attributes that other places do not have. I know that if you are a regular reader and researcher of the Bay Islands you already know about the white sand, aqua waters, warm tropical breezes, the lack of snow, ice and frigid cold. Many of these things are why we attract so much attention.

The Bay Islands is also different in many other ways and one of those is the old time 1950’s ‘feel’ of community. The government does not do much here though neighbors help each other. Local churches kick in, as do special fund raising events like local BBQ’s. You knowing where you are directly helping and contributing is not as ‘easy’ sometimes if a government agency is doing it for you. If you are contributing directly, or maybe with one person in between, it is always far more productive.

Our island does not have an educational facility for children who have special needs.

Knowing that the government would not be offering any assistance, a group of local mothers have started a project themselves to start a school for their special needs children. In order to do this they have generated a fund raising calendar to help pay the one and only teacher that they have.

Recently this new center for special needs children was opened. It is the ‘Cattleya Center’ located in French Cay.

As of now, they only have a Speech and Language Therapist who is there on Wednesdays, so they are looking for volunteers who might like to contribute some time and effort helping them to get organized for the new school year.

This group has printed a beautiful 2014 Calendar with paintings by one of their students. We at RE/MAX are supporting this fund raiser by selling these calendars for them at both of our locations , (Jackson Plaza & West Bay Mall). Whether you visit or live here, please stop by and purchase one for this group that certainly can use your help. They are $12.50 U.S. and all funds go to a great cause and a real need.
