When considering a ‘home away from home’ especially on an island, there are questions that go through your mind in the evaluation of the entire process. One of those evaluations is medical care. There is no doubt that the low end of quality can be lower than what you are accustomed to, and at times the high end may not be as high, but overall there are major advantages also and the quality can be excellent.
I first posted this list one year ago (November ’13), but since I thought it best to ‘update’ this list with doctors and services that have come to my attention.
I put together the following list for foreigners and it may be something you may wish to hang on to. This type list with phones and emails can change over time but right now I believe it to be accurate. Every doctor on this list speaks English and has an email, (they do not do that in the states:). Many have their personal cell phones also.
One of my personal favorites is the Radiologist Dr. Paz. Getting a full body MRI there twice has saved my life for things that no doctor there would normally check for, in that a full body MRI there would be price prohibitive. (about $15,000, here about $500.00). Dr. Paz also has a primary care clinic in the same building so you can get a complete physical, including your blood work, a full body MRI and evaluation for a small fraction of what you would pay in the U.S.
Here at times language can be a challenge and although most of us can generate enough ‘bad Spanish’ to order food or take a taxi, dealing with medical challenges are something quite different and require very clear communications.
CEMESA Clinic/Hospital now offers a concierge service, whereas they recognize the language barrier can be of vital importance. They now provide a service whereas they have a person go with you , step by step, test by test, doctor and exam by exam, walking you through the process. A couple of the doctors here are at the very top of their professions in this country and a couple in the very top tier in all of Central America.
CEMESA has committed to place a hospital and Clinic on Roatan and from every source I can find the plans are to move forward and they hope to be operational by mid 2015.
