Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!
As with the US, Roatan’s celebrations for the holiday were very different to how they have been in years gone by. RE/MAX on Roatan, Newsletter – December 2020, observed that although there were a few restaurants and bars that catered for small groups, the numbers were limited due to biosecurity measures. Instead of the “expat families” having get-togethers with their island friends, many simply stayed in and celebrated with the people closest to them.
With that being said, there were a lot of food stations set up providing food to people less fortunate. Definitely, there is a lot of gratitude being passed on right now! We, on Roatan, realize that we are very fortunate. Absolutely, there was no place better, for those of us that stayed, to be in the midst of a worldwide pandemic. The views; the outdoors; the ocean; the weather; the community spirit made it easier to cope than in most places around the world.
Additionally, the two recent hurricanes that missed us, made us appreciate our location more. What we saw happen on the mainland, as a result of the storms, was devastating but we were spared.
Roatan is home, it is a haven and it is an amazing place to live.

ROATAN LOCAL MARKET
Plato said, “Necessity is the mother of invention.” and this has turned out to be so very true in these times of adversity. It is thought that 80% of the population has been negativity effected by the economic collapse of the island due to the pandemic. Obviously, tourism, directly or indirectly, housed, fed, clothed much of the population.
In spite of this, the island’s people have risen to the challenge and will not be beaten. Indeed, the situation has forced them to dig deep and find a creativity and resourcefulness that is truly wondrous to behold. A group of artisans have put together a board, with regulations, to provide a space for artisans to sell their products whilst creating a platform to exchange knowledge and skills.
In particular, they plan to reactivate the local economy in a multicultural, safe, ecologically and environmentally friendly way including as many entrepreneurs as possible.
The products include all types of drinks and food from bread and pastries to organic and healthy snacks, sauces and jam. There are all sorts of crafts including paintings, jewelry, natural cosmetic products and recycled wood and plastics.
Additionally, it is a platform for local performers to show off their skills: music, recitals, dance, fire dancers as well as other NGOs promoting and raising funds for their current projects.
Biosecurity measures are applied and they manage the distribution of packaging and waste disposal responsibly.
Furthermore, they provide training to the artists on marketing, quality improvement and packing, etc. A small fee is collected from the artisans and a calendar of events, held in various locales across the island, is to be published.

CANADIAN OFFSHORE TAX INFORMATION
Some months ago, after posting information on US taxes when living offshore, we mentioned that we would soon have a similar situation for Canadian Taxes. Little did we know that there are many Canadian tax experts that dealt with offshore taxes, but the huge majority were dealing with taxes mainly for people from China and Canadians living in the far east. We actually had a difficult time finding a firm that dealt with Canadians that wished to live offshore in Central and/or South America. We succeeded. MEDICAL INSURANCE IN HONDURAS – YOU’RE COVERED!
Undoubtedly, this is one of the facts that should be common knowledge to tourists and travelers, but it isn’t!
Did you know that The National Chamber of Tourism (Canaturh) and the Honduran Institute of Tourism have a medical insurance policy that covers all passengers arriving into Honduras, by air only, automatically on entering any Honduran airport. You will be covered for 30 days from your arrival date or until the end date of your trip or whichever happens first.
You didn’t know? Many of us remain unaware of this reassuring fact!
It is called 504 Assist and covers medical treatment (up to $7,000 per person) for any illness or accident, including emergency dental treatment, that you may suffer whilst in Honduras.
And it is easy to sign up – go to https://web.504assist.com (conveniently in Spanish and English) to find out more details, or there is a “504 assist insurance in Honduras” App that you can download to your Smart phone or tablet from either the Apple or Google Store (search 540 assist in your App Store). It would be advisable to do this in advance of your visit so that you have registered your trip and have all the necessary information at your fingertips in the event of sickness, accident or emergency.
Better to be safe than sorry so we hope you use this information to your advantage so that your vacation does not transform from delightful to dire should an unforeseen medical emergency arise.
